According to Verisign’s latest domain name industry brief, in the last quarter of 2012, the number of registered domain names had passed 250 million. The traditional .com domains make up most of the registered domain names. By the end of 2012 there were about 106.2 million .com domain names and 14.9 million .net registered domain names. The .com and .net domain names make up the majority and are the top level domains. The majority TLDs are in order according to their majority size; .com, .de (Germany), .net, .tk (Tokelau), .uk (United Kingdom), .org, .cn (China), .info, .nl (Netherlands) and .ru (Russian Federation).
It was then reported that in the start of 2016 the registered domain names had reached 326.4 million. In the first quarter of 2016 there were 12 million registrations for new domains. Globally domain registrations have increased by 32.4 million or by 11 percent each year. By the first quarter of 2016, the .com and .net comprised of 142.5 million. By March 31st 2016, it was reported that the combined .com domain names equaled 126.6 million whereas the .net domain names were 15.9 million.
There are more than 1000 top level domains available today; these addresses cover up everything from .abb to .zw. New domains keep getting added after some time pushing it over the 1000 threshold. A few years back in 2009 it was stated that there were only 280 top level domains out of which most domains were based on country codes such as .uk for United Kingdom and .de for Germany.
However this has change now, over the years the number of top level domains has increased greatly. The famous .com, .info, .org and many more top level domains make up most of the majority now. Earlier the country coded domain names made up 89 percent of the market, however now it makes up only 29 percent.
Even the newer domain names such as .sucks or .horse is immensely increasing over time. Within six months the number of domain names has doubled to 3.7 million in to 6.5 million in 2014. The registered domain names keep increasing, not only year by year but day after day. People keep registering themselves to new domain names as they have started making new websites and need the domains. Online businesses are increasing their awareness and thus people need these domains to increase their success.
